How Is Work Assigned?

Our summer program is intended to give an accurate picture of associate life in our office and at our firm. We provide our summer associates with the opportunity to work with a variety of lawyers in our various practice areas. Summer associates are asked to preference a specific department during the interview process and assignments are disseminated based on their expressed interests and the availability of work. We select two associates on the Recruitment Committee to serve as our work assignment coordinators for the summer. The work coordinators are responsible for managing the summer associate projects and ensuring that summer associates receive a challenging, yet manageable workload. Recent summer assignments include drafting agreements, drafting a treatise, discovery requests, memoranda, briefs, journal articles and patent applications. Summer associates also worked on multi-district litigations, international arbitrations, appellate cases, large class action suits and cases pending in local state courts.

How Am I Doing?

Feedback is a key component of our Summer Program. During the course of the summer, supervisors are asked to fill out a confidential evaluation form for every completed summer associate assignment. We also encourage attorneys to provide appropriate guidance during the course of the work assignment, and meet with the summer associates to discuss their performance at the conclusion of each assignment. The Summer Partner and Hiring Partner conduct a formal midsummer review and an exit interview with each summer associate based on their individual evaluation forms.

Will I Have a Mentor to Answer My Questions?

We pair each summer associate up with both a partner and an associate mentor for the summer. Mentors are available to provide you with assistance and advice on matters ranging from legal research and drafting memoranda to answering questions about our firm policies and procedures. In addition, members of the Recruitment Committee and other attorneys in the Firm are always available to assist you and serve as unofficial mentors during the summer program.

What Type of Training Will I Receive?

Summer associates participate in a comprehensive orientation program that introduces them to a variety of firm administrative matters, including training on the firm's technology systems. The firm offers breakfast and lunch seminars covering legal research and writing, ethics, negotiations, history of the firm and overviews of the various practice areas within the firm. We also encourage attorneys to include summer associates in client meetings, discovery conferences, depositions, hearings and trials to the extent possible. Finally, summer associates are invited to attend all legal staff and departmental meetings to learn about ongoing developments within the firm.

"I chose MLA because everyone I met at the firm seemed to be genuinely concerned about the development of young lawyers.  I am looking forward to this summer because of the opportunity to see the practical application of my classes and my efforts to solving real problems for real clients."
Kevin Barnett, Summer Associate, American University 2010

"I chose McKenna Long and Aldridge for my summer employer because they were so highly regarded in Government Contracts and because of the enjoyable experience I had interviewing with them.  The partners and associates with whom I spoke were very easy to talk to and seemed genuinely interested in learning about me and the experiences I had, in addition to what I could offer the firm.  After extending their offer, MLA made it very clear that they believed I would  fit extremely well with the firm and expressed excitement at my possible employment there this summer. I appreciated them reaching out, and it made my decision very easy to accept their offer."
John Sorrenti, Summer Associate, The George Washington University 2010
