POLICY DIALOGUE
Public Health in Emergencies: Transatlantic Experiences
31 March 2006
Brussels
We have the pleasure in inviting you to attend a policy dialogue on public health in emergencies to be held in Brussels on 31 March 2006. The event will highlight, discuss and compose the experience of the EU and the United States with regard to medical responses to disasters. In recent years, the European continent has suffered from infectious diseases, terror attacks and critical infrastructure failures. The threats may be different, but the effect is often the same: authorities are placed under pressure to work effectively across borders to protect the safety and security of citizens. The EU’s role in managing emergencies across its policy domains is growing. The time has come to insert additional strategic direction into this growth area of transnational activity, which tends to cut across boundaries in both bureaucratic and geographical terms, inside as well as outside the Union. It is thus timely to coordinate a policy dialogue to discuss the management of public health security in response to these growing threats. To this end, the European Policy Centre ( EPC), with the support of McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP, will have a policy dialogue on Public Health in Emergencies – Transatlantic Experiences.
