Former Director of Center for Medicaid and State Operations at CMS Joins Growing Health Policy Practice

WASHINGTON (February 22, 2013) – McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP (MLA) is pleased to announce that Dennis G. Smith is joining the firm’s Health Policy practice as a managing director in the Washington, DC office, effective March 1, 2013.

“Dennis will be a tremendous asset to our health policy efforts in Washington and across the country,” said Cindy Gillespie, who leads the Health Policy practice at MLA and previously served as counselor to Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. “His extensive operational experience within CMS and inside state governments will be extremely valuable to our team and to the entire firm.”

Smith is an experienced and highly successful health policy strategist, having served most recently as Secretary of the Department of Health Services for the State of Wisconsin. Previously, Secretary Smith served as Director of the Center for Medicaid and State Operations at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) under Secretaries Tommy Thompson and Michael Leavitt. He also served as Acting Administrator of CMS from December 2003 to March 2004. In addition, Smith also held positions as Medicaid Director for the Commonwealth of Virginia and as Chief of Planning for the California Department of Developmental Services.

On the MLA Health Policy team, Secretary Smith will join Gillespie as well as former Vermont Governor and physician Howard Dean, and Chuck McMullen, who served as Chief of Staff to Tom Price (R-GA) and as regional Political Director for the American Medical Association (AMA). The Health Policy team advises clients on long-term market opportunities and business strategies related to health system and health insurance reform, including new payment models and health insurance exchanges. In particular, the team uses its unique combination of policy and political acumen and legislative and executive branch experience to help clients analyze emerging health policy and regulation, develop original policy solutions, and impact future policy ideas in Washington, DC and across the nation.

The Health Policy team is part of the firm’s Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs practice, led by former U.S. Ambassador to Canada Gordon Giffin and Eric Tanenblatt, former chief of staff to Governor Sonny Perdue (R-GA) and advisor to the late U.S. Senator Paul Coverdell (R-GA). The practice includes former Georgia Governor and U.S. Senator Zell Miller; former U.S. Congressmen Buddy Darden and David Skaggs; former Georgia State Attorney General Thurbert Baker; former assistant to President William J.
