The U.S. Justice Department, concerned about shattering fragile tri-state water war negotiations, filed a motion this week to put the brakes on a settlement agreement giving metro Atlanta more water. Florida spokeswoman Deena Wells said Wednesday the Deparment of Justice motion is "a very positive sign. ...We think [the settlement] was a mistake, and once that errant, illegal effort is dissolved, we can proceed with new negotiations with the tri-state water agreement." Bruce Brown, the McKenna Long & Aldridge attorney who handled the settlement for Georgia, said the Justice Department and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers already signed it. The Justice Department "doesn't take issue with the settlement agreement, but for some reason objects to the court being notified of its existence, an objection which, frankly, we don't understand," Brown said. "It's odd to say the least."
