PROFILE

Ian Portnoy focuses on corporate and transactional matters involving intellectual property. This practice brings together expertise in corporate, securities, tax, executive compensation, patent, copyright, trademark and other intellectual property rights. Ian's legal work and business advice have been pivotal in a wide range of transactions from those involving licensing of software, international licensing of web-based content, business methodology patents, fiber optics to website development, computer integration contracts, privacy issues, joint ventures and partnering agreements among web-based companies and among web-based and traditional companies. His experience includes unique agreements involving the IP effects of deregulation of utility companies, the simultaneous posting in different countries on the Internet of date sensitive scientific materials covered by U.S. securities regulations and the structuring of one of a kind public/private joint ventures and privatization. He regularly advises corporations on the range of legal issues implicated in the use of the Internet and technology in commerce and in the workplace. Ian is an experienced Arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association focusing on software and licensing controversies and disputes involving complex IP agreements and contracts.

Ian also has considerable experience in real estate development matters having, for example, represented developers and public authorities in projects around the country involving air rights and unsubordinated ground leases and health care companies in their real estate and public/private joint ventures. He regularly represents not-for-profit organizations, including independent schools, on a wide variety of financial, corporate real estate and transactional issues.

Prior to private practice in Washington, he was counsel to a major public company based in Philadelphia.


COMMUNITY AND CIVIC INVOLVEMENT
  • Ian is active in civic and cultural affairs. He is the Chairman of the Board of Embassy Series, Chairman of the Board of Dumbarton Concert Series, a member of the Board of Directors and Audit and Finance Committee of WETA (public television and radio in Washington D.C. with an $80 Million Dollar annual budget), a member of Leadership Washington and has been Chairman of the Section of the Potomac Conference concerned with the relationship of technology to the arts, culture, tourism and educational sectors of the Greater Washington economy.
  • Ian has been honored by the Big Brothers of the National Capital Area for his service to Big Brothers and the Greater Washington community. He is on the Board for a monthly business magazine devoted to the issues of business and technology.
