Experience
Ted Van Der Meid is counsel in our government affairs department and political law practice. Mr. Van Der Meid assists clients with public policy issues and the legislative process. His practice focuses on ethics, congressional oversight, compliance, and matters related to the legislative process.
Mr. Van Der Meid brings over 20 years of experience to McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP. Before joining the firm, he served as Counsel and Director of Floor Operations for Speaker of the House of Representatives, J. Dennis Hastert. In this role, Mr. Van Der Meid coordinated all legal and ethical issues for the Speaker. He also worked with the House Counsel, Legislative Counsel, Law Revision Counsel, and Parliamentarian. As Director of Floor Operations for the Speaker, Mr. Van Der Meid oversaw the daily operations of the House Floor working with the Majority Leader’s Office, Majority Whip’s Office, and the House Rules Committee. Mr. Van Der Meid also coordinated all institutional operations of the House on behalf of the Speaker working with the Clerk, Chief Administrative Officer, Sergeant at Arms, Office of Emergency Planning, Preparedness, and Operations, the Architect of the Capitol and well as contingency operations of the House. He also advised the Speaker on committee assignments for Republican Members.
In addition, Mr. Van Der Meid was Staff Director and Chief Counsel to the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct (House Ethics Committee), General Counsel to the Office of Republican Leader, Honorable Robert Michel (R-IL), Legislative Director to Congressman Jan Meyers (R-KS), and Budget Associate to Congressman Lynn Martin (R-IL).
