Experience

Jeffrey P. Altman has broad experience in the world of nonprofit organizations, including trade associations, foundations, professional societies and political organizations. His primary areas of skill include governance, tax, lobbying/campaign finance compliance, risk management/insurance, executive employment contracts, and nondues revenue. In addition to providing business and legal counsel based on his extensive knowledge of the best practices of such organizations, he serves as general counsel, special counsel, director and officer to a number of nonprofit organizations. Mr. Altman currently serves as a member of the Public Policy Committee and also as a Director of the for-profit captive insurance company subsidiary of the American Society of Association Executives. Within the firm, he serves as the head of MLA's Nonprofit Organizations practice.

A frequent speaker and writer on the organization, governance and operation of nonprofits, Mr. Altman is past chair of ASAE's Legal Section Council and previously served as a member of ASAE’s Audit Committee and as a Director of ASAE’s for-profit subsidiary that develops affinity programs for ASAE and its members. He is also the past chair of the District of Columbia Bar Committee on Not-for-Profit Corporations. Mr. Altman is a graduate of Yale College and Tulane University Law School, where he was associate editor of the Tulane Law Review and was admitted to the Order of the Coif.
